Pub Walk (99) Saturday 2nd October 2021, from the Merrymouth Inn, OX7 6HR

North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale

Nine walkers turned up in wet weather for the 99th Saturday Pub Walk. This was at the Merrymouth Inn, Fifield, recently re opened in April 21. The first walk here to welcome new owners who in their first year have achieved good scores in their newly refurbished accommodation.

Located just over the North Cotswold Glos border in neighbouring Oxfordshire, this is fine walking country. Also ,the first monthly walk since Walk 98 at the Royal Oak Andoversford in March 2020 due to COVID restrictions. We are very pleased to be back and set off after ordering lunch and taking the customary group photo (Photo 1) outside the pub on the busy A424 Burford Road.

Heading North then immediately left heading West on a lane leading to Workham Farm. Soon a footpath appears ahead on the first RH bend leading down hill through a wooded area. Pause at the bottom to admire a stream running through well kept landscaped grounds. Carrying on a clear good path alongside two fields to Limekiln Plantation.

Well maintained aircraft Hangars on the RH side remain from the RAF Rissington era which now house the Volunteer Gliding Sqn. Turn sharp left and follow the clear path heading south. Follow the path south for 3 fields then turning east, dropping into the valley, then up the other side onto a diagonal path. On reaching Tangley Farm and the road turn sharp left adjacent to the buildings onto a footpath across 3 open fields heading NNE. On reaching the A424 cross over with care in the same direction for 2 more fields. At a junction of paths turn left heading west for 2 fields back to the A424. Stay on the RH side heading north, then cross over back to the pub after a few hundred yards. A 4.5 mile easy walk with good views over open country well away from the usual Cotswold walks.

Wet weather prevented many photographs during the walk and we were glad to get back to a warm pub to dry out and enjoy a good value lunch (Photo 3) washed down with Hook Norton Gold served by host Wendy (Photo 2). Only one beer currently but more planned as business picks up. The Merrymouth Inn is very much back and well worth a visit.

Next walk is No 100 at the Horse and Groom, Bourton on the Hill on Saturday November 6th, the first at this excellent venue now under new management. This should be a great milestone in the history of N Cots CAMRA at a venue which has hosted some of our most memorable Xmas Dinners.
