Pub Walk (97) Saturday 1st
February 2020, from the Horse & Groom, Upper Oddington
|
North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for
Real Ale
|
Sixteen walkers turned up at Upper Oddington
in fine dry weather for the 97th Saturday Pub Walk. This was the 4th
walk here to welcome new owners Warren and Norman who in their first year have
won the Autumn Seasonal POTY award. We held 3 previous Walks at this great pub.
Walk 25 and 45 when Simon and Sally owned it, the second due to them wining Pub
of the Year in 2013. Then Walk 75 in 2017 for new owners the Redesdale group
who sold in 2018 to the present team.
We set off after the customary group photo
(Photo 1) uphill passing a road turn
on the right until reaching a footpath on our right. Some mud here following
months of rain but soon across the stile onto drier high ground. Left at a
junction of paths to the reservoir for a great view and (Photo 2). Now heading west past Stow Rugby Clubhouse then past
Paddocks emerging at the entrance to Martins Hill on the road from Stow to
Bledington. Left here on the road heading south east taking the second footpath
on the Left. Great views all around (Photo
3) before heading due north emerging at the entrance to the Rugby Club (Photo 4). Immediately taking the
footpath on our right across two fields then left at the next stile.
Downhill skirting a large house under
construction emerging at a road turning left then right uphill to the road linking
Upper and Lower Oddington. Left downhill to Lower Oddington Church where right
onto a footpath skirting the Churchyard then downhill across two paddocks (Photo 5) before turning right onto a
lane back to the pub passing houses with many Snowdrops (Photo 6)
A great lunch was enjoyed in front of the
log burner (Photo 7) washed down
with a choice of Goffs Jouster, Prescott Hillclimb or North Cotswold Best (Photo 8)
The next walk is the 98th on 1st March at the Royal Oak
at Andoversford.
