Pub Walk (75) Saturday 4th
March 2017, from the Horse & Groom, Upper Oddington
|
North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for
Real Ale
|
Seventeen walkers turned up at the Horse &
Groom Upper Oddington for the 75th of our Saturday Pub
Walks. A replacement for the Fox Inn due to lack of sandwiches but the first
time at this pub with new owners following Simon’s retirement. Weather was
sunny and dry as we set off after the team photo (Photo 1). Heading left from the car park and downhill through Upper
then lower Oddington past a ‘friendly’ Rottveiler and two small companions (Photo 2). Now uphill to the Fox Inn
pausing to show our appreciation (Photo
3).
At the main road we turned right downhill
over the rail line then left towards Evenlode past a wooded lake on our right
then right on a footpath to Adlestrop. Emerging at Lower Farm and welcomed by a
horse and donkey (Photo 4 and 5) we
turned right at the road before pausing at the Bus Shelter and old station sign
for Adlestrop (Photo 6) Continuing
East uphill we took a footpath on our left opposite a road* to our right to
Adlestrop. The footpath swung right uphill with fine views behind over the valley.
Emerging at Fern Drive we turned right back to the main road and right downhill
turning left into Adlestrop at the road* mentioned above.
Pausing at the thatched Post Office and
Village Shop to regroup (Photo 7)
before continuing downhill to the Church and Adlestrop House. Recent storm
damage evident here with a massive fallen tree (Photo 8). Following the Macmillan Way we headed SW past the cricket
field and the lake again. At the main road we retraced our step via Lower
Oddington with a delightful detour on a footpath on our left adjacent to the
Church (Photo 9) with fine open
views to the South.
Back to the pub for lunch (Photo 10) and a choice of Wye Valley
Bitter and Brakespeare Bitter, the latter undrinkable, rejected and replaced by
a new barrel of Oxford Gold.
The next walk is the 76th of the
series on Saturday 1st April 2017 at the Kings Arms, Mickleton. GL55 6RT
