Pub Walk (74) Saturday 4th
February 2017, from the Lamb Inn, Great Rissington
|
North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for
Real Ale
|
Fourteen walkers turned up at the Lamb Inn
Great Rissington for the 74th of our Saturday Pub Walks. The first
time at this pub neglected in the past due to limited beer offering. Weather
was sunny and dry as we set off after the team photo (Photo1). Heading left from the car park in a Northerly direction
then immediately right on a road to Great Rissington Hill. Follow the footpath
signs through gates on a private drive then right into woods near the snow
drops (Photo 2) skirting a disused
quarry heading left and East.
Two
large Lama’s took a great interest (Photo
3) as we passed right and South at the next junction of paths. Crossed the
next road on a path through the next field emerging at the Barrington Road. One
more field along the road edge then right into a narrow path heading West over
fields past a gaggle of geese (Photo 4).
Emerging at a bridleway we turned left now heading South along a track for 4
fields.
Due to heavy rain in the past week and
footpaths though well signed were very muddy so field edges were used which proved
firm and easily passable. Views over the Windrush valley on this clear day were
excellent (Photo 5) as we turned West
and downhill towards the River then North alongside the Windrush pausing for a
(Photo 6).
As we
continued North we disturbed a herd of 17 deer who ran off across the adjacent
field led by a large stag. There are many deer here and a second herd of 9
followed a little further on. Most have escaped from Barrington Deer Park and
live happily in this valley.
We continued
NW after the woods we crossed two more fields on the edges and paused to
regroup (Photo 7) admiring the
valley. Then through the ornamental high hedges near Manor Farm emerging at the
Church (Photo 8) and back to the pub
for lunch (Photo 9) and a choice of
Hobgoblin, Leaping Lamb House Beer (Photo
10) and for most of us Wychwood’s Dry Neck 3.6% apv brought in for the
occasion.
Thanks to Landlord Paul and his staff for a
great Lunch. He has 16 rooms in this cosy pub which are comfortable and usually
well booked on weekends.
The
next walk is the 75th of the series on Saturday 4th March 2017 at the Fox Inn Lower Oddington.
