Weekend Away to Tenby, October 19th to 22nd, 2012

North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale

Following the successful trips to the Isle of Wight and Bournemouth, this years choice was Tenby in SW Wales. Ten regulars booked in to the Coast and Country Imperial Hotel on half board enjoying comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast and evening meals for three nights. (Photo 1) A welcome break after the beer festival season. On the way down some of us stopped for lunch at the Friends Arms Carmarthen a 2011 POTY (Photo 2) with its own small microbrewery (Photo 3) and friendly Barman (Photo 4)

On Friday afternoon before dinner the first Tenby pub was the Crown (Photo 5) adjacent to the hotel and within the old castle walls right next to the hotel where the four Brains beers and two guests were in excellent form. Maps and Pub Data were provided by Peter Rowe who travelled by train with sister Linda and husband Brent who have become our regular London attendees.

On Saturday morning (Photo 6) we set off on the walk along South Bay to Penally  in  sunny weather alongside the golf course. Arriving early allowed time to visit Penally Church (Photo 7) before opening at the Cross Inn (Photo 8) where Penally Old Codger, Doom bar and Rev James beckoned. (Photo 9)

The return walk along the beach with the tide receding was stunning (Photo 10) and the view up to the hotel showed the Imperials domination of the beach.(Photo 11) following which the Hope & Anchor beckoned (Photo 12) and excellent beer range (Photo 13) Felinfoel Double Dragon, Daleside Autumn Leaves, Rev James, Everards Equinox,  Kite Thunderbird, Hobgoblin and Adnams Ghost Ship.

Sunday was sunny again as we set off towards North Bay past The Coach & Horses Tenby’s oldest pub frequented by Dylan Thomas (Photo 14) Through Upper Hill Park and returning via Waterwynch Bay (Photo15) and stopping near second point for a well earned rest (Photo 16) before returning via North Bay beach (Photo 17) to Tenby Harbour (Photo 18). Back to the Hope and Anchor to try the remaining beers followed by a night in the Crown after Dinner in the Hotel.

Some opted to return home via Saundersfoot the following morning following an excellent weekend and we look forward to  another venue next year.
