Stow Stagger 2009

North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale

On Thursday 26th Feb several members of North Cotswold Branch of CAMRA assembled at the Queens Head for their Stow stagger. Detailed Preparation for the evening had been made by Patrick McKenzie and David Bowden who had surveyed and compiled a list of Stow pubs with the beers and prices of each listed. (Photo 1)

Armed with this list we set forth and briefly visited the Green King Kings Arms to link up with Jon Pilling who was trying to sell them some guest beer before heading for (Photo 2) and settling in at the recently refurbished White Hart (Photo 3). The Landlady here has recently closed the side gate to the adjacent alley which has raised local concerns due to loss of access to the Square. Hopefully peace will return shortly. This Arkells pub serves excellent Kingsdown and 3B,s and is one of the first Arkells pubs offering Donnington SBA as a guest.

Following a Committee review of the latest GBG statistics for 2010, the only business covered on the night, we moved on to the Wadworth owned Talbot where well kept Henrys and 6X were on offer. The cheese board was also sampled as a taster from the highly recommended food menu. (Photo 4) This was the best atmosphere of all the pubs visited particularly suitable for mixed company with candle lighting and a wonderful view over the square.

The Grapevine Hotel was next on the list since the Unicorn was unexpectedly closed at ten. The lone beer, Goffs Tournament was in good nick served from pins to maintain quality in this very comfortable privately owned hotel

Back to the Queens to report on the evening to Patrick and to thank him for the usual local advice and guidance. The final sample of SBA a suitable nightcap. No one was staggering but a most enjoyable evening.
