Pub of the Year 2012

North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale

Presented to the Craven Arms, Brockhampton, on 5th April 2012

On Thursday evening 5th April 2012 a long awaited framed certificate was presented to the Craven Arms Brockhampton as winners of CAMRA North Cotswold Branch Pub of the Year 2012. Branch Chairman Roger Price and other committee members were present as Martyn Herbert, Pubs Officer and Beer Festivals Director presented the sought after award to son and chef Sam and mother Barbara Price for consistently good real ale quality and service beating over 90 other pubs in the North Cotswold area. They with Landlord Bob Price who was also present have run the pub for 9 years and have achieved significant recognition listed in both the Good Beer Guide and the Good Pub guide.

In presenting the award Martyn drew attention to some of the features that have contributed to this latest success, namely providing consistent excellent beer choice and quality by Sam together with personal service from the staff led by Barbara. The choice of beer has been varied with very fair opportunities for local and regional brewers. Runners up for the last three years to the Ebrington Arms, they have persevered with dedicated enthusiasm running Beer Festivals and providing added value with well supported events for their local community. A visit to the Ebrington to bench mark and a friendly comparing of notes with their main rival at Cotswold Beer Festival trade night was very touching to behold and an indication of their desire to win.

The Craven Arms is in an idyllic setting in stunning walking country close to Cheltenham but hidden away. This requires initiative and extra special service  to attract and maintain a customer base. This has been achieved tipping the scoring in their favour and thereby snatching the top spot from the Ebrington with the Horse & Groom at Bourton on the Hill in a close third place.

The presentation was very well attended by the community with the certificate awarded during the March Quiz night followed by a great party for locals on the following Sunday.

The Craven Arms now goes forward during May and June 2012 for assessment against other Branch Pub of the year award winners in the South West Region and we wish them every success as a worthy winner of North Cotswold POTY 2012.
