Mystery Tour over the
Severn Saturday 26th February
2011 |
North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale |
24 members
of CAMRA were picked up in Wayne’s bus again, this time for a Mystery Trip
heading for the West after the pick ups from Bourton, Stow, Toddington, Grete
and Cheltenham. Organised and planned with secret recce’s into alien country (Wales)
by Martyn Herbert. Once past Gloucester one anorak had a map out with
GBG pubs highlighted in yellow trying to guess the destination but to no
avail. Chepstow was not in the reckoning ….. |
…. but pleasantly surprised we parked up and walked
uphill to the Coach and Horses our first stop. |
No time for lunch here since we were due back on the
bus art 1300hrs but enough for a couple of pints of various ales from Gwent.
(Photo Right) Only one passenger ventured into Wetherspoons before rejoining
the main party |
After a tremendous warm Welsh welcome we travelled
on to the next secret stop. |
This was at
Tintern, where we had a choice of pubs, most settling for the Moon and
Sixpence for lunch (Photo Right) ..... |
….. and a great view of the River Wye drinking, you
guessed, Wye Valley. |
We had two
hours here enough time to call into the Wye Valley Hotel |
Time also to
meet the staff. |
Meanwhile some of our party had decided to eat in
the Wye Valley Hotel (Photo Right) Some keen
Glos members had walked ahead to the pub at Brockweir called the Brockweir Inn
and you guessed, it is in Gloucestershire on the East side of the Wye so they
felt at home. Our bus was too large to park there so we picked them up at the
bridge as we passed heading for Monmouth and then Ross, aiming for the White
Lion at Wilton. |
Alas a
temporary weight restriction confounded the secret tour and we turned around
crossing the Wye at Brockweir. Wayne’s mirrors survived the next 4 scary
windy miles into the Forest of Dean. The Angel at Coleford beckoned but
quickly rejected since they had run out of Ale so we quickly rerouted to the
reliable Miners Arms at Parkend (Photo Right) for a good selection before
heading back to Cheltenham and the drop offs. |
An excellent
Mystery tour with a sting in the tail, many thanks to Martyn and we look
forward to the White Lion another time. |
