Day out to Chepstow,
Saturday 11th June 2011 |
North Cotswold Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale |
Our “Day Outs” give an opportunity to visit a nearby town outside our Branch Area. This enables us to try different beers and/or to explore the area. The town selected this year followed from the mystery tour “Over the Severn” on 26th February. We visited Chepstow on that tour, but only had a short stop. Many suggested Chepstow was worthy of a more extended visit, hence this day out.
At 12 noon a good turn out of ten CAMRA members met at the
Wetherspoons Bell Hanger, 9-10 St.
Mary Street. Most of us set the day off well with an all-day breakfast. I had
a couple of pints of Butcombe Bitter, which was in excellent form. |

We then set off walking to the Chepstow Athletic Club on Mathern Road, a long standing GBG listing. After a long wait under a bridge whilst a heavy shower passed over, we eventually arrived and enjoyed the beers on offer. Then we headed for the next pub, the Coach & Horses, on Welsh Street. Having been delayed by the shower, most of us decided not to rush to catch up on the itinerary. Hence we were able to enjoy a couple of beers here before moving on to the last pub. |
The last pub visited was the Boat Inn, The Back. This pub was located right on the River Wye, so we sat outside enjoying the views. Later another shower came over, forcing us inside for the last pint. Amongst the beers on offer was Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. |

The view from the Boat Inn, looking across the River Wye. Another day out (our 8th to date) had sadly come to an end, and we headed back home, looking forward to the next one, wherever it might be. |
